We are waiting for Summer with Winter behind us in the wonderful Outer Banks. This time of year at this beach community has an array of challenges and leisure filled times to be part of. The weather can go either way, can have 30 degree swings, a Nor'Easter or two but any day at the beach is a good one, right? While the weather can challenge us here so can it bring us a blessed day or few. I have seen 80+ degrees in mid-April and then a high in the 50's the next week!
Also, we see the dynamics of our local traffic and influx of visitors starting to change. Imagine all the beach homes that are closed for the winter opening up. Do you know what happens here when this time arrives? The homeowners and local vendors that help jumpstart the homes and get them open for vacationers are hitting the local hardware stores and other related supply providers. New decks, paint, change out that window, put in the new stove or other appliances...whew! The list can get long. But, between the "do it themself'ers" home owners and the locals that help them it all gets done some how on time.
The restaurants that have been shuttered for the winter are all gearing up, doing deep cleans, hiring staff, getting their food vendor on the phone, connecting with the local seafood and produce providers, too. They aren't ones that do not have to get their paint brush out so they are freshening up, as well. College Students and the International Student Work Programs are calling and emailing the local stores to get their positions locked in at the beach. Work and fun is the way for these folks that summer here. Oh to be young again!
The property management companies have their handyman and speciality crews in "go mode" and making lists, calling owners for window cleaning, repairs that are needed and informing the owners of how many weeks their cottages have booked. The website pictures for the cottages have been updated by now and fingers crossed that those last open weeks book up!
Finally, the winds are shifting and the ocean waters that have been raging all winter are starting to relax and remind us of the reason why we get so many visitors here in the Outer Banks. The sandy beaches are opening up to windbreaker wearing visitors already and many have them off and ties around their waist by the time May starts. Dogs are free to roam until Memorial Day and their owners enjoy the running on the beach as much as their four legged friends do because of how much space their seems to be without sun lotion lathered vacationers here yet. We all know those days are not far now........
I think all should come and enjoy the off season of the OBX. Many I met and now own a home here fell in Love with our area due to visiting in the Spring or Fall. The beach is the beach is the beach....anytime of year. However, when the summer dynamics are not upon us the rawness of the weather and perspectives that are more in tune due to not being in vacation mind set show one that this strand of sand's beauty, as fragile as it may seem, really can connect on a different level. Come experience Spring in the OBX......bloom into Summer with the local growth, you will not regret it!
