sunset_on_the_outer_banks CURRITUCK, N.C. (AP) -- Tourism traffic is up and so are vacation bookings along North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported Wednesday that hotel and real estate managers say tourists have been back this summer after financial worries led many families to cut back on vacations last year.

Currituck Tourism Director Diane Nordstrom says heavy traffic on weekends is one indicator that tourism is returning to normal. She says another is that most vacation homes and hotels are near capacity.

Ross Twiddy of Twiddy Realty says vacation bookings got off to a slow start this spring, but picked up…

Of the many attractions along the Outer Banks, its not often the small airport behind the Wright Brothers Monment gets spotlighted.  The airport along with a few Outer Banks businesses were highlighted in the article.

The Outer Banks: First Flight Airport

Read the welcoming sign post as we tied down the airplane and made our way to the Wright brothers’ memorial site. But I am getting ahead of my story. There were many hurdles to cross before we could be there to read that sign. This was one fly out I did not want to miss!

Two days prior to our planned flight the aircraft we had reserved was down for maintenance.  Then the day before the flight, I found out I needed to do a checkout again in the carbureted-engine aircraft we had…

Good Mention of the Outer Banks on MSNBC Blog

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 1:17pm. 31 Views, 0 Comments.

There was a quick mention of the Outer Banks on, Island paradises are closer than you think.

With adjacent seas nicknamed the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the Outer Banks are home to rough waters that are often more ideal for surfing than swimming. Nancy Schretter, managing editor of the travel website Family Travel Network, recommends Hatteras Island, along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, for "its miles and miles of pristine beaches with very white sand and rolling dunes." Hatteras visitors can bring dogs on the beach, a bonus for travelers who want to vacation with their pets.

N.C. shipwreck speculated to be ghost of 1609

A shipwreck exposed on the beach by winter storms could date to a time of commerce between England and Jamestown in the early 1600s.

Possibly the oldest known wreck on the North Carolina coast, the timbers and construction of the ship are very similar to the Sea Venture, the 1609 flagship of seven vessels that carr ied people and supplies to Jamestown, said Bradley A. Rodgers, a professor of archaeology and conservation in the maritime studies program at East Carolina University.

Stimulating an N.C. oyster revival

BY JACK BETTS - The Charlotte Observer

HATTERAS -- For hundreds of years commercial and recreational fishermen have been taking some of creation's tastiest oysters out of the shallow waters of Pamlico Sound just inside the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

But after harvests plummeted due to overharvesting, declining water quality and a nasty parasite in the last third of the 20th century, folks like Todd Miller and Craig Hardy and a host of others have been trying to put them back.

Miller, executive director of the nonprofit N.C. Coastal Federation and Hardy, of the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, have been working with a coalition of groups including the National…

But learn more about them, and you might find that they fit right into a vision of a how a town government can be relevant in these days of environmental awareness and thrifty lifestyles.

Primitive in their function, they are 21st century in their purpose.…
